Chapter Nineteen
Sixtus imagined he had about two hours before the police issued an APB for his arrest. Unless the surviving assailant somehow found time to remove the body and scrub the crime scene, Sixtus and his wife would soon be fugitives. Hopefully, Kara was somewhere safe and dealing with the locals under an assumed name.
He drove over to 23rd Avenue near I-17 and pulled into the darkened Knoll-Highland industrial center. The car rolled slowly through the parking lot until it arrived at a building near the interior of the complex. Sixtus reached inside the BMW’s glove box and pulled out a remote control for the roll-up delivery door. He swept the area for security cameras before pulling the car inside a nondescript warehouse and closing the door behind him.
After removing the license plate, he took out all the identification and registration documents from the glove compartment and fed them into a commercial metal shredder located against a far wall. The motor strained a moment as it ground up the contents. When the whine of the engine subsided, he opened the collection bin and looked at a clump of blackened material composed of shards of paper, plastic and metal.
In an adjacent bay, another vehicle had a tarp over it, and Sixtus removed the covering to reveal a late model white Ford Escape. He opened the driver’s door, slid inside and rifled through the various contents of the glove box, pulling out a driver’s license, social security card, passport, several credit cards, a new phone and a birth certificate. Each of the cards and documents bore the name, Mark Simpson. A new identity could provide cover until he made sense of this mess. Hopefully, he might resume his life as Jeffery Clayton someday. He tried to stay optimistic, but a nagging feeling told him he shouldn’t count on it.
The Mark Simpson persona was strategically placed into various government, insurance and banking databases in case an unexpected emergency arose. Time Sculptors created multiple identities in strategic positions of power and authority as soon as they arrived in their assigned era. The implant made hacking into primitive cloud-based servers easy, and Mark Simpson was one of several unique personas Sixtus set up. Simpson was a pedestrian man who dutifully paid taxes, conducted personal transactions and stayed out of trouble.
Over the years, Sixtus periodically slipped into each of the different characters to maintain their relevance and preserve their existence in the system. The only suspicion he encountered was from the auto salespeople when he traded in a car every three years with less than 200 miles on it.
After destroying the rest of his Jeffery Clayton identification, Sixtus returned to the Escape, raised the hood and removed the cables from a trickle charger. After re-connecting the device to the BWM, he got into the other vehicle and powered up the new phone. He accessed an app on the old device, and after making a few menu selections, all his contacts, pictures and documents transferred over. Before leaving, he threw the old phone in the metal shredder.
